The Department of Medical Examiner investigates and determines the circumstances, manner, and cause of all violent, sudden, or unusual deaths occurring within the County. It receives about 18,000 reported cases per year (roughly half falling within its jurisdiction) and conducts about 5,700 autopsies annually, making it one of the largest and most technologically sophisticated medical examiner's offices in the world, handling numerous high-profile cases. This position is subject to the County's Management Appraisal of Performance Plan (MAPP).
