As the Accessibility Lead, you will be responsible for integrating accessibility into every phase of Agile delivery, supporting the certification process, and educating stakeholders to ensure NICHD’s digital platforms are inclusive and compliant. This role is essential to building trust with end users, meeting federal mandates, and sustaining NICHD’s digital modernization efforts. You will lead accessibility reviews, provide compliance certifications, and support internal accessibility awareness through training and documentation. What You'll Do - Serve as the Accessibility Lead for all NICHD web development and digital content initiatives, ensuring full Section 508/WCAG 2.1 compliance. - Participate in Agile ceremonies and governance checkpoints to embed accessibility into each development phase. - Lead the review, remediation, and certification of websites, web applications, and digital documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, emails, multimedia). - Use a combination of automated and manual tools (e.g., aXe, WAVE, NVDA, JAWS, Lighthouse, PAC 3.0) to assess accessibility. - Provide certificates of compliance for reviewed materials and maintain compliance documentation for audits and governance. - Attend NIH 508 Advisory Group meetings, summarizing outcomes and reporting to the NICHD 508 Coordinator. - Collaborate with designers, developers, content creators, and QA engineers to address accessibility gaps and implement best practices. - Respond to ad hoc data calls from NICHD leadership, including detailed monthly reports tracking reviewed content, issues, resolutions, and certifications issued. - Advocate for accessibility-first thinking across teams and promote inclusion as a core design and development principle. Required Knowledge and Skills - Bachelor’s degree in Web Development, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field. - 7+ years of professional web development experience with 3+ years of dedicated accessibility compliance experience. - Deep understanding of: - Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards - ARIA implementation - Semantic HTML, keyboard
